We meet at Mang Domeng’s tonight after our classes in Labor Law which ends at 9:00 PM at the college of law. Mang Domeng is a tricycle terminal by day and makeshift lugawan by night. Some of us refer to this place as Goodah. Might have something to do with the relief and ‘high’ feeling we have after a class. Mang Domeng’s is our local equivalent of StarBucks. Unlike StarBucks where you comfortably sit in the lounge, this one’s give you a snapshot of the real world. People from different walks of life pass before your eyes. You picture their stories and struggles by the expressions they have. Each has a story that can break one’s heart. We meet at Mang Domeng’s, the 20 of us in the class to delegate work loads in digesting legal cases. We are given at least 10 cases to digest for every subject (there’s about three subjects in one night). That means, we have to read all of them and make a summary of the facts, the court’s decision from the lower court to the Supreme Court and annotate the relevant court decisions and jurisprudence. We combine three tables at least, order some lugaw and spread the photocopies of the cases. We also get free hot garlic soup by the way. So we spread the cases in the table, and assign who will do the case digest. Note: If you want to survive law school, you need to have your own support group like this.
Freshmen by the tradition of law schools are called inchoates, largely because we’re there and we’re also not there. We are not yet considered law students until we step into our second years. Ahh, it’s our first year in the college of law and counting.
